BOTM + Review – Divergent
The book for the month of May is going to be Divergent by Veronica Roth. I’m sure you’ve heard of the movie, it come out recently in cinemas. I had read the first book a while back but never got around to reading the rest of the series until this month so that’s why I’ve decided to recommend this book for this month.
The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic Chicago as we follow young sixteen year old Beatrice in this world where the city divides it’s citizens according to their personality into five factions; Abnegation, the selfless, Dauntless, the brave, Erudite, the intelligent, Candor, the honest and Amity, the peaceful.
My favourite character of the book has to be Four. He’s this great that’s hard to unravel. We didn’t really know who he was or what his real name was. Only that he came out the top in his class during initiation. But as Beatrice ‘Tris’ got closer to him, we started to see who is was and. He is the this young man who can be kind, loyal and like everyone else has fears, fears that almost seem impossible to overcome.
The characters in the book are all mainly sixteen years old that I sometimes feel like maybe they’re all acting a bit mature for their age. But you’ve got remember that they live their lives differently. They’re world is different. Teenagers are forced to grow up and get jobs. It’s the way of the city.
There are some parts in the story that do make you wonder, what’s going to happen or why are people doing this. It keeps the story really interesting and of course, Veronica throws in some questions which of course don’t get answered until the other books.
My favourite part of the book was a scene between Four and Tris. It was when Four opened up to her and let her in in his Fear Landscape. There she tried to help over come his fears. I felt like this scene defiantly brought them closer.
All in all, this characters in the book are interesting and the situation that this city lives in makes for one good story that will grab your attention through to the end.
